Isaiah 53:5

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

The inspiration for this design comes from Isaiah 53, prophesying the future suffering of Christ. The 3 stripes of blood represent the blood of the first passover lamb that was stricken on the posts of the doors and saved the first born children of Israel. The crown of thorns and the 3 nails that are silhouetted in the blood foreshadow Christ's coming as the final and perfect Lamb of God, and that His sacrifice that would take away the sins of the world (John 1:29)
